Whose Bar Food Reigns Supreme? “Contest”

Living in a college town is very interesting, especially when you’re living next to the street where about 65% of the public loves to go on a daily and nightly basis, Aggieville. I’ve ate at some of the restaurants on this street, but I’ve never ate food at the “Bars” within Aggieville. With Bar food, I’m picky at what is often served, simply because the food is often mediocre. This past month, I realized that the food is not why that establishment is there in the first place. People go there to simply drink, while the food serves as a supplement to your drinking/hanging out needs.  Bar food, like pub food in Europe, serves a purpose to please many customers with elegant dishes. In other words, many pubs have often raised their standards to a higher quality of restaurant/food service of cooking. I’ve been to some bars with great food, and some with not so great food across the country. I must inform you that there’s a huge difference between a “Bar & Grill”, and a Bar that serves food. With bar food/bars, it has little emphasis on serving high quality food, but they do have delicious specials offered to eat. The main thing you may see at a bar is wings, burgers, and tacos. So due to the fact that there’s a lot of restaurants and Bars in Aggieville, I want to know based on your suggestions, Whose Bar food reigns supreme in Aggieville?

Contest Rules:
Each week, I will find a time to sit down, eat, and interact with others.

Each Bar will have at least one representative that will sit down with me to offer suggestions about the food, while telling me things about the Bar (Service, Atmosphere, Cleanliness, Specials, History, etc..). I will also be the one to talk with whoever the owner or the head chef is of that place.  Whichever bar wins “Best Food” will be up for a write-up in my blog “Food of The Regions” later in the fall/early winter.  The only bars and restaurants that will not be in this contest, are the ones in which are franchised (ex. “B-Dubs, Fuzzy’s, Pizza Hut etc..), and of course restaurants that are NOT Bars, but is still a local business within the district.

With this, I’m grading heavily on the food, flavor, presentation, Menus, and creativity.

Public people, I need your help. All you have to do is send your suggestions to me on Twitter, or my g-mail account: ronaldatkinson66@gmail.com, and explain why does that bar have the best food? and what dish do you suggest that I eat?

Looking forward to see your suggestions, and seeing which Bar in Aggieville has the best food.

Subs-N-Sutch: The Best Bang for Your Buck

In case you did not know, every Monday is sandwich Monday. Located just right on the edge of Kansas State Campus behind the bank, across from Throckmorton hall, lies a delicious sandwich shop called Subs-n-such. In all of my three years of living in Manhattan, I had never gotten a chance to come into this local establishment until a couple of weeks ago. I had first heard about it when I moved in my freshman year in the dorms. It wasn’t until a couple weeks ago when a friend of mine, Alyssa, said her family now operates the business. With no articles written about this great establishment, here’s where I came in.

To give a shortened history lesson, Subs-N-Such first opened its doors on Seth Child road back in 1980 when a couple of owners, Les and Sharon Swenson, were finding a way to pay for their in-state tuition. With only selling 10-15 sandwiches a day, it boom to success over the next few years. Eventually, it had turned over to new owners twice since it had first opened. Currently, it is now in the hands of Paula and Darrin Frey.

After reading the reviews online, Subs-N-Such is Home for “The Kitchen Sink” sandwich which is exactly what I ate (minus a few veggies). Like most sub shops, you get to pick your bread. Fresh Baked French Bread, Wheat, or Sour Dough. Two cheeses of your choice, sauce, and veggies.

I chose to get the usual mayo, lettuce, and tomato toppings on my sandwich. Just to keep it simple while savoring the balance of the flavor. While I was eating this sandwich, I thought to myself that this sandwich is fit for a king. From the measurements of the sandwich it weighs about 2.16 LBS, Height 3.75 inches, with the length of 13 inches. This is indeed the best sub sandwich I had ever eaten. The bread was very soft, the entire sandwich was very flavorful, and I don’t know how I happened to eat the entire sandwich.

Even after eating the entire sandwich, I still managed to get myself a Beirock. With the owner’s grandmother’s recipe, it is a great hit to get on Fridays…. But you must get them early before they are sold out.

All cookies, Brownies, and other baked goods are also big and homemade. My favorite one in which they’re quick to run out, are the Banana-Chocolate chip cookies.

There’s a large variety of many different sandwiches, meats, toppings, and other stuff that you can always choose from.  I do recommend that you go check this delicious restaurant out. It is sure not a disappointment for your money. Since K-State is known for being a school that represents the value of “Family”, this restaurant does a perfect job of holding on to that K-State Spirit and term within the shop. The restaurant serves Manhattan and the K-State community very well. Walk inside, and see for yourself the K-State Themed atmosphere. Click below for their website, and also give them a “Like” on Facebook.

Subs-N-Such is located at WILDCAT LANDING, on the corner of Claflin & Denison; 1800 Claflin, #170, Manhattan, KS. Open from 10am-9pm, and Sundays from 11am-7pm. Oh....They also deliver, and will cater to your parties and events.

I always say, if it's the best, they'll get featured in my blog. I will indeed be coming back to this restaurant. It's the ONLY sub shop in town that serves delicious, and fresh food.
